The study of a second language engages people in the exploration of cultural diversity: new worlds of people, customs, literature, and history suddenly become more understandable when they can be approached directly through the primary language. It is one of the cornerstones of a liberal arts and sciences education.

Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, is hosting Zombie Zumbathon Saturday, October 29th from 1-3pm in the SUB Activities Room! Zumba is an increasingly popular latin dance aerobics work out. This Zumbathon will be led by certified Zumba instructor Chelsea Braun of Columbia, MO and can help you burn 2000-3000 calories during the event. Feel free to dance and workout as much or as little as you like during the event. There will be a costume competition during the event as well. Cost will be $3 for students and $5 for adults. These are special Truman discounts! Ditch the workout. Join the party!
José Antonio Fábres (’88) volvió a Truman para nuestro Homecoming, y dio una presentación sobre el Camino de Santiago el viernes, 7 de octubre a las 7:00 en BH 314. Después de haber obtenido su bachillerato en español de NMSU, en 1988, José obtuvo su maestría y doctorado de la Universidad de Kentucky en Lexington. Desde entonces trabaja para las instituciones College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University en Minnesota. Su vida académica, aparte de haber publicado artículos en el Instituto Cervantes, ha estado dedicada casi exclusivamente al servicio. Además de haber ocupado el cargo de jefe del departamento de Hispanic Studies por 12 años ha creado programas académicos en Valladolid, Viña del Mar y el Camino de Santiago.

Please be our guests at our First Annual Classical and Modern Languages Open House! Your professors in Spanish, French, German, Russian and Classics are still here! We go back 15, 20, 25 years and more, and we’d love to see you again! Get together with old classmates, network with other alums, sample international cuisine, and re-connect with your old professors!

Works by students’ favorite Hispanic authors and original works were performed by students and faculty. There were 3 rounds: beginning Spanish, advanced Spanish, and English. There were also fun prizes and karaoke between rounds! Admission was free, but donations were accepted at the door on behalf of a charity.

Truman State University was well represented at the Annual Conference of the Foreign Language Association of Missouri Annual Conference held in October 2010 at the Lodge of the Four Seasons.
Thirteen current and former students in the Master of Arts in Education program as well as three faculty members attended the conference. Brandi Moeller Pruente, French teacher at Truman High School in Independence, gave a presentation titled La Belgique: Sa Langue, Sa Culture et Sa Beauté. Dr. Carol Marshall and Dr. Timothy Farley gave a presentation focused on designing thematic units based on their collaboration in the MAE program. Farley also gave a presentation on using French radio podcasts in the classroom. Dr. Gregg Siewert lead a roundtable discussion of teaching ideas for the French classroom. Nita Shipp, Moberly, currently serves as the Region III (northeast Missouri) Representative to the FLAM executive board.
