Latin at Truman State University

Classics Faculty

Meet our faculty, whose interests range from Plautus to St. Jerome. Individual members are especially interested in such things as Roman history, the meaning of gender in antiquity, Roman satire, post-Classical and early Christian writings, as well as the major and minor works of Vergil.

Studying the Latin Language

Take Latin at any level (elementary, intermediate, and advanced), even a course in Latin prose composition. Our students read texts based on Roman comedy while studying the fundamentals of Latin at the elementary level; prepare intermediate readings in Cicero, Sallust, Ovid, Catullus, and Apuleius; and do advanced work in epic poetry, drama, philosophy, and history.

Related Courses: Latin Across the Curriculum

Pursue your interest in Latin by taking courses in Latin or Greek literature (in translation), mythology, classical civilization, and gender studies. Select courses in related disciplines, such as art history, rhetoric, ancient history, and philosophy.

Opportunities Abroad

Consider traveling abroad: several Truman faculty members lead annual trips overseas, including 3-week study tours in Greece (Sacred Sites in Greece), Italy and Germany (The Art of Power), and Egypt (See (More Than) the Pyramids).  Students on these trips have visited such places as Athens, Mycenae, Delphi, Florence, Rome, and Cairo.  Read about these and other (semester and summer) study abroad opportunities.

Eta Sigma Phi/Classics Club

Explore the cultures of Greece and Rome through food, film, and informal conversation.  Join the national organization and share your love of Classics.
