Who may enroll in French 232? Any student who has completed FREN 221 or who is currently enrolled in FREN 221. It is strongly recommended that all students be enrolled in at least one other French class during the Fall semester.
Do students receive credit for French 232? Yes, students who complete the requirements for FREN 232 (See Syllabus under How to Enroll link) receive 1 hour of elective credit. In addition to the weekend requirements include attending the pre-departure meeting (to be announced), and completing the post-weekend composition
Do I need a yellow card? Yes, contact Professor Ron Manning (rmanning@truman.edu; 660-785-4018; Ballwin Hall 274), the faculty coordinator, for a yellow card.
Is there an extra fee? Yes, students who enroll in FREN 232 will be assessed $40 to cover food and lodging expenses. The Business Office will invoice you at the time of enrollment.
Can students with dietary restrictions attend the camp? Yes, students with dietary restrictions should discuss problems/needs ahead of time with the faculty sponsor. He will make arrangements for the student's dietary restrictions.
What accommodations are at the camp? Camp Jo-Ota has dormitories with bunk beds and mattresses, bathrooms with hot water showers, and a full kitchen and dining room.
What do I need to bring? Bedding (pillow and sleeping bag or the equivalent), comfortable shoes, a change of clothing, sleeping attire and personal effects. You may want to bring a flashlight.
May I bring a tent? Sure. For those wanting to sleep à la belle étoile, there are ample places to pitch a tent.
What activities are available at the camp? The camp begins with an ice breaker, followed by skits directed by Dr. Patrick Lobert. As Camp Jo-Ota is in a wooded setting with a small lake, students may go canoeing and hiking. Other sports such as basketball, badminton, volleyball and soccer are available.
Before dinner, students may play any number of French board games, play cards or listen to music. After dinner activities include watching a French feature film or enjoying the evening around a campfire.
Should I bring French books? You won't need any scholarly French books such as dictionaries or grammar books. You may wish to bring interesting or amusing books (bandes dessinées), French games (jeux de société), or French audio CDs.
I'm not sure if I can speak French for an entire weekend. Do I really have to speak French? Yes. When you arrive at Camp Jo-Ota, you will enter a French-speaking enclave. Students are expected to speak French for the duration of the weekend. Some students begin speaking French right away. Other students spend several hours listening to others speak French before they feel comfortable expressing themselves in French.
Who attends the French Immersion Weekend in addition to students? The faculty coordinator, other members of the French faculty, and other French-speaking guests may attend. |
