The study of Portuguese opens up a world that spans from Brazil to
Mozambique and that boasts over 190 million speakers, making it the
eighth most spoken language on earth! Many students of Portuguese
are drawn by a fascination with Brazil and its Carnaval, others by a
concern for the fate of the Amazon basin, and still others by an
attraction to the rich cultural heritage of Africa, which permeates
the Portuguese of Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape
Verde and São Tomé e Príncipe.
Portuguese Faculty
Studying Portuguese
Truman offers one year (two semesters) of elementary Portuguese.
Part of the program consists of pairing Truman students with college
students at the Universidade Estadual Paulista in Assis, São Paulo,
Brazil, in a unique internet partnership called Teletandem, a live
audio-video chat with native-speaking language learners (http://www.teletandembrasil.org/home.asp).
Opportunities Abroad
Participate in semester or summer study abroad programs in Brazil
and Portugal through Truman’s Center for International Education.
