Portuguese at Truman State University

Why Study Portuguese?

  1. Carnaval! To dance the samba in a massive street parade during Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, you would want to know what all that mad happiness is about, wouldn't you?
  2. The Amazon! If you're concerned about the fate of our planet, the Amazon basin speaks Portuguese, along with hundreds of other indigenous languages... and of course the private idioms of thousands of endangered plant and animal species...
  3. Africa! The rich cultural heritage of Africa permeates the Portuguese of Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau ... and invites you to a great celebration of resilience, resistance, and rebirth.
