Russian at Truman State University

In accordance with the mission of Truman State University, the Classical and Modern Languages Department offers a broad spectrum of languages, including Russian, a language which ranks among the top ten high frequency languages of the world, and which is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.  Russia remains the largest nation on earth at 1/6 of the planet's land mass.  The Slavic peoples, Russians first among them, constitute the largest ethnic group in Europe.  The ability to communicate in Russian with an understanding of Russian culture and Russian people is an essential concern for the United States.   Read what James F. Collins, former U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation, now Director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment, and Matthew Rojansky, deputy director, recently had to say regarding Russia's continuing importance in Why Russia Matters.

The Russian program at Truman State University provides students a broadly-based understanding of Russian literature,  culture and thought.  Those students who successfully fulfill the requirements of the Russian major will attain advanced language proficiency enabling them to communicate effectively with native speakers of Russian.  They will possess a critical appreciation of Russian literature and they will be well versed in Russian cultural history.  They will be prepared to compete advantageously for entrance into and support from the best U.S. graduate programs.
