Costa Rica

Enjoy a complete Spanish immersion experience! Every summer many students take advantage of this eight-week study program. Students will live with Costa Rican families and experience firsthand Costa Rican culture and customs. Students attend classes five hours a day Monday through Thursday at the Cipet, a historical building located in the downtown area of Alajuela where they will study language, culture, composition, conversation, and Latin American literature. On the weekends, students enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica by traveling to the rain and cloud forests, beautiful beaches, majestic volcanoes, the Bri-Bri Indian reservation, sports and cultural events, and many other exciting places. For information about credit hours, cost, and financial aid, please contact Vera V. Piper, Director, MC 332, 660.785.4490, email: vgpiper@truman.edu and visit costarica.truman.edu

Spain

This eight-week program provides language, conversation, literature and cultural instruction at one of the most renowned language institutes in Salamanca--Academia Mester. After a ten-week course of intensive preparation on the Truman campus, the students travel to Spain where they attend the institute, live with Spanish families, and take part in many group activities for a period of six weeks. Upon completion of the classroom work in Salamanca, students visit the regions of Catalonia, Castile, and Andalusia for two additional weeks. The objective is to have the participants totally immersed in and interacting with Spanish society. This provides the students with a truly intercultural perspective -- one which focuses on cultural processes as these occur in particular historical, environmental, social, and political contexts. This allows growth in the life skills and language proficiency that help students thrive in the global community.
